Jerusalem Church Parochial School

View of the Area in 1888

In 1804, the Jerusalem Church built a parochial school house on this property, which was open all year. Instruction was in German.  The fee was two cents a day. Around 1815, some English instruction was included. From 1830-1845, the Sunday school of the Jerusalem Church also took place in a building of this lot.

In February of 1845, Annville Township voted as to whether or not they would adopt a public school system.  The idea was strongly opposed by many, particularly in the rural areas, who were hesitant to have their children learn English for fear that German would be forgotten.  Although the rural areas could have outvoted the town, a snowstorm which hit on the night preceding the election made roads impassable such that the townspeople found little opposition.

Because many people of Annville preferred the option of a public school, instruction at the private, parochial school came to an end in 1845.  The building was sold to Dan Seabold as a private residence.
