495 Maple Street

German Baptist Brethren Church

The German Baptist Brethren purchased this land from F.W. Yake, Lydia (Kreider) Kettering, and H.H. Kreider in 1905, the same year that the lots at 444 and 438 were sold by the Kreiders.

In 1906, construction on a three-story church was begun, which was dedicated on April 21, 1907.  The structure was damaged by the tornado of August 1915: the roof was blown from the church such that the gable ends and ceiling needed to be replaced.  However, it was able to serve the congregation until it was partly destroyed by fire on February 22, 1947, after which the present church was built.  Mateiral from the first church was saved and used for the new building, which was completed in November of 1949.
