511 and 513 East Main Street

Frederick William Yake, a local builder, and Emma Marie Zeigler first lived on this property when the white wooden house (513) was located on the corner.  In time, Emma encouraged Frederick to build them a house of their own, so he built the red brick house currently on the corner (511) and moved the white house eastward to its present position.  Before moving the white house, the furniture was moved from house to house through the windows on large planks to avoid having to carry the furnishings down and up the stairs.  The agreement with the subsequent next owners was that the Yakes could live in the apartment above the garage as long as they needed.

The red brick home that Frederick built at 511 East Main Street is a prime example of a home of “American Craftsman” architecture.  The heyday of American Craftsman coincided with the beginnings of Sears and Roebucks, who sold plans for that style home in their catalog.
