The property at 466 East Main St was first deeded in 1927. The lot for this house was obtained from the Jerusalem Reformed Church at 200 South White Oak Street (the starting place for this tour). At that time the adjacent property at 474 East Main was the parsonage for the church. The home was built by Professor Ritchie, a scholar of religion at LVC. As he built, Professor Ritchie lived directly across the street in a property that was owned by LVC and provided to professors. Dr. Ritchie's daughter eventually took ownership of the house. Around 1960 she decided to turn the second floor into an apartment: an exterior stair case went from the side of the house around to the back and entered the second floor apartment at an enclosed second floor porch. A bedroom and bathroom were also added to the first floor at the back of the house, and the side portion of the wrap-around porch was enclosed. In the early 1970's George and Donna Young rented the apartment and about 1975 they bought the house. When Kindred Place was built behind them, George and Donna decided to look for a more rural setting. Ken and Gail Karabatsos bought the house in 1996 and have updated many of the mechanicals of the house such as plumbing, heating, and electrical. They have also redecorated much of the interior. |
