314 East Main Street

Residence of Elizabeth Heisey

314 East Main Street in 1888.

This home was built for and owned by a single woman in the 1860’s and inherited matrilinearly for over eighty years.  Elizabeth Heisey, a single woman, purchased two lots of land from John Saylor in 1866, the one occupied by this house and the one east of this property at 320 East Main Street. We presume John Saylor subsequently constructed this house shortly thereafter. Little is known about Miss Heisey except that she most likely lived the latter part of her life in San Joaquin county California with her niece, Alice Gingrich Cowell.

Elizabeth’s sister, Mary Heisey (1831-1898), married Daniel Gingrich (1824‑1913) and raised several children born between the years 1846 and 1869 as reflected by the United Brethren Cemetery’s records where Mary and Daniel are interred. The US census of 1860 lists Daniel Gingrich as a farmer, and the census of 1870, a carpenter. The Gingrich children are Elias, Adam, Sarah A, Malinda, Amanda, Alice K, Annie M, and Emma.

In 1913, working from San Joaquin county, Elizabeth transferred her property to her nieces Alice Cowell (b 1862) and Alice’s sister, Emma Gingrich (b 1869), “a single woman of Annville.”  In 1929, again from California, Alice transferred the property to Emma Gingrich.  It is believed that Emma lived here from as early as 1913.  Emma’s estate passed the home to her nieces, Sallie Risser and Edith Harnish.

In 1949, the Buck family purchased the home at public sale from the Risser-Harnish families. Their daughter, Marilyn Buck Hibshman, her husband, Paul, and their family lived here until 1988.  In that year, Helen Marie Traglia and Thomas Hockley purchased the home, where they now live with their son Nicholas.
